CONTRASTES | Johanna Hess – Csilla Kudor – Mariano Mayol

May 21 – July 31, 2016
Centro de Cultura SA NOSTRA, Palma de Mallorca

Three bodies of work – as diverse as one could possibly imagine: Photorealism meets constructivist-inflected emotionality and oceanic abstraction. Unveiled in the exhibition CONTRASTS are the paintings of three artists – two from Germany and one from the island of Mallorca. The playful exploration of the fundamental essence and impact of colour by the Bonn-based artist Johanna Hess encounters the monumental, photorealistic creations of Romania-born Csilla Kudor, who lives and works in Bremen. Her paintings bear witness to her intensive pre-occupation with the cultural history of various nations. In his work, the Majorcan Mariano Mayol immerses himself in the ocean which he portrays from an abstract and historical perspective. Emerging from his overlapping layers of colour are figurative forms, usually in the guise of cartographic and landscape motifs.

Opposites are said to attract, of course – and can also promote dialogue: between artists of different nationalities applying different modus operandi, between the image and the public, and between the partners on the Balearic Islands and in Bonn. Accordingly, the staging of this exhibition is the fruit of the close cooperation between its organisers, the Caixa de Balears Foundation and the Foundation for Art and Culture in Bonn.
